Cosmonauts of Expedition 61 conduct Spacewalk #60 outside the ISS

International Space Station, International Space Station

Expedition 61 cosmonauts are venturing for their fifth spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS) on Friday, October 25 to install new batteries on the P6 truss.

The Expedition 61 spacewalkers will upgrade the orbiting lab's power systems and repair a cosmic particle-detector during their mission.

The Expedition is commanded by ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano, who became the third European and the first Italian astronaut to command the ISS. Parmitano, along with his Soyuz MS-13 colleagues Aleksandr Skvortsov and Andrew Morgan, and Christina Koch from Soyuz MS-12, transferred over from Expedition 60. They were joined by Oleg Skripochka and Jessica Meir who arrived at the ISS onboard Soyuz MS-15.

The International Space Station is gearing up for a record pace of spacewalks this year.

This is the last spacewalk in October which aimed the activation of the new batteries on the station's Port-6 truss structure.
