Colourful fireworks light up the night sky as 'buck moon' glows above DC

United States, Washington DC

Ruptly is live from Washington DC on Saturday July 4 (Sunday, July 5 EDT time), as a display of more than 10,000 fireworks lights up the the sky against the backdrop of the July full moon. The full moon, also known as the ‘buck moon' in the US, is expected to be visible in the skies above the capital.

The phenomenon occurs when the moon is located on the opposite side of Earth to the sun.

The full moon is the first of the summer and was named `buck’ as early summer is normally the time when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur.

NOTE: Transmission may be cancelled in the event of poor weather (mist, rain, snow, storms).
