Russia: Police PUSH unsanctioned rally off Moscow's Manezhnaya Square

Russian Federation, Moscow
December 30, 2014 at 11:33 GMT +00:00 · Published

Police cleared Moscow's Manezhnaya Square of around 1,500 activists who were taking part in an unsanctioned rally in support of Alexei Navalny, Tuesday. A court found the Russian opposition activist guilty of fraud earlier in the day. Most protesters departed the square after police called on them to leave the area. However, some 170 people were detained at the scene by OMON and police officers.

Navalny received three and a half years on parole in an embezzlement case, while his brother Oleg was sentenced to three and a half years in prison. Both Navalny and his brother Oleg stand accused of defrauding the French cosmetics company Yves Rocher of ($537,000; €433,000) between 2008 and 2012. Alexei Navalny was detained at the Moscow protest, Tuesday for defying house arrest.

It is not the first time Navalny has been in trouble with the law after he received a five-year probation sentence in 2013 for a graft scheme in relation to a government-owned company in the Russian region of Kirov.
