Russian tennis players Maria Sharapova suffered defeat at her only match in the Tie Break Tens rapid tennis tournament, held in Madrid on Thursday. The match was held as part of a charity event to fight domestic violence against women.

Speaking to press after her appearance, Sharapova said, "It was a lot more fun than I expected. I loved the format, I loved how quick it is. you know, a short warm up, you get ready and you are ready to go."

Commenting on her defeat, Sharapova said, "It's quite a very fast format. So you have to be ready, depending on when you start. And to warm up and get ready for a match it is always tricky. We always know ahead of time but in a quick format like that you got to get ready, which I wasn't."

"A lot of the people see us playing and competing, it's nice for the audience to get a chance to see us just enjoying ourselves and actually enjoying tennis," added Sharapova.

This was Sharapova's second match following her return to the sport in late April. Sharapova was suspended from playing for 15 months after failing a drug test at the Australian Open in 2016. She had been taking the drug 'Meldonium', which had been given to her by her family doctor for the past 10 years and was not on the banned substances list for that period.

Meldonium was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of banned substances on Jan. 1, 2016. It is used medically to treat ischemia, or a lack of blood flow.
