USA: Footage emerges of alleged Russian spy questioning Trump in 2015

Footage has emerged on Tuesday of Russian citizen Maria Butina, who was recently charged with conspiracy to act as an unregistered Russian agent, asking US President Donald Trump a question at an event in Las Vegas on July 11, 2015.

Butina can be heard off-screen asking the then presidential candidate: "if you would be elected as a president, what would be your foreign policy, especially in the relationships with my country, and do you want to continue the politics of sanctions that are damaging both economies, or do you have any other ideas?"

Trump went on to answer that "incompetent leadership" had driven Russia and China together, and that he believed he would get along well with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"We have driven them together. That's a horrible thing for this country. We have made them friends because of incompetent leadership. I believe I would get along with nicely with Putin, ok? And I mean where we have the strength. I don't think you'd need the sanctions. I think we would get along very, very well, I really believe that," Trump said.

Butina was arrested on July 15 but the criminal complaint was only made public the day after, only hours after US President Donald Trump held a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the end of their Summit in Helsinki.

The 29-year old Russian graduate student entered the US in August 2016 on a student visa and is being accused of working as an agent on behalf of the Russian government in the country. Butina's lawyer denied all charges against her.

Butina is set to appear before the US District of Columbia Court in Washington DC on Wednesday, July 18.
