Russia: US ‘hunting Russian citizens abroad’ – Ambassador Antonov on Butina’s arrest

Russian Federation, Moscow
July 18, 2018 at 11:40 GMT +00:00 · Published

Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov reflected on the Putin-Trump summit and also discussed the arrest of Russian citizen Maria Butina in the US over spying charges, speaking in Moscow, Wednesday.

The ambassador said he “very much” liked the Helsinki meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump.

“It seems to me, both presidents have connected with each other […] I saw that Mr. Trump was listening to Putin. But it does not mean that Mr. Trump agreed absolutely with everything what Putin was saying,” said Antonov.

Talking about the American media response to the summit, the envoy said “It is very frustrating that the atmosphere [around the summit] is being instantly perceived negatively.”

The ambassador stated he is “scared of saying something positive about the US president. Because when US journalists or politicians read my interview they will say 'that Russia is again meddling in the internal affairs and is helping Donald Trump'.”

He went on to discuss the case of Butina, who was arrested by the FBI last week for allegedly working for the Kremlin and trying to infiltrate the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the Republican party.

“Unfortunately, the US special services are hunting our citizens not only in the USA but also abroad,” Antonov said.
