Russia: Butina going through ‘terrible inspection procedures’ in jail – Zakharova

Russian Federation, Moscow
August 23, 2018 at 17:37 GMT +00:00 · Published

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that jailed Maria Butina has been forced to go through “terrible inspection procedures” in the US. Zakharova was speaking during her weekly press conference in Moscow on Thursday.

“Our citizen was forced to go through humiliating, and I would say, terrible inspection procedures, [they] took away all things, including clothes, food, personal hygiene items, kept [her] in a quarantine cell for 12 hours without food,” said the spokesperson.

“Any requests of the Russian woman for urgent medical care that affected deterioration of her health were ignored,” she added.

According to Zakharova, Butina’s mistreatment only came to an end after “efforts made by our diplomats, including a tough demarche of the state Department and the US Embassy in Moscow.”

The spokesperson also stated that Moscow is concerned about the lack of information about the health and location of Julia Skripal and her father Sergei.
