*PARTNER CONTENT* Battleground France: Who is behind France's Yellow Vests?

France, Paris
December 22, 2018 at 12:11 GMT +00:00 · Published

What started as a protest against fuel taxes, blew up into a full-scale uprising in France. Hundreds of thousands of Yellow Vests have been taking to the streets, blocking roads and clashing with police across the country.

But is the movement really spontaneous or is it controlled by political interests?

President Emmanuel Macron and sections of the media have highlighted the right-wing views of some of the Yellow Vests supporters, which has garnered the backing of leader of the far-right National Rally Party, Marine Le Pen.

Regarding the influence of the far-right on the Yellow Vests, one protester told redfish: "It’s bullshit. It’s bullshit. It’s manipulation."

Another said: "There are definitely people from the extreme right and definitely people from the extreme left. There are also people who don't care about politics, there are people who have never voted before in their lives, they don't give a fuck, there are people who voted for the moderates, the right, the left, me I voted for [Jean-Luc] Mélenchon."

Amidst a fourth week of protest, dubbed Act IV by the Yellow Vests, redfish met with groups which have been struggling to keep racist groups out of the burgeoning movement.

The sister of Adama Traore, whose death in a police cell in 2016 sparked riots in the suburbs of the French capital, told redfish: "The extreme-right has made sure that there is violence and racist acts among this movement of the Yellow Vests. The Yellow Vests do not belong to the extreme-right, they belong to us, to the population, to the people from the countryside and the working-class districts."

During the third week of protests, leader of the neo-Nazi French Nationalist Party, Yvan Benedetti, was beaten up by anti-fascists who spotted him amongst the demonstrators.

The following week protesters chanting "Paris Antifa" chased a group from the extreme right Action Francaise out of the demonstration.

Representative of railway workers union Sud Rail, Basile Pot said: "Clearly the extreme right, which at the moment is trying to place itself in the movement, does not represent the interests of the workers. They never have done. The demonstrations chase away the fascists."

Another representative of Sud Rail, AnasKazeb, said the success of anti-fascists in the Yellow Vests is crucial for the whole of Europe which is struggling to grapple with the surge of racist groups: "It is our duty to succeed, to move and make things happen, because we know that what happens in France will have consequences everywhere.

"If we don't get in there, it’s the fascists who will take over the Yellow Vests movement and it will finish with Marine Le Pen getting elected at the next general election. We don’t want that. That’s why we have to mobilise."
