Marzieh Hashemi, an anchor for Iran's state-funded Press TV, was released from FBI custody on Wednesday after spending ten days as witness in an unspecified criminal case. She complained she was mistreated by the FBI officers during her detention in an interview with London-based RT presenter Afshin Rattansi, as she appeared via video-link from Washington DC on Thursday, January 24.

"They took my mug shot without hijab and one of the guards actually said ‘oh, would you like a T-shirt? At least, you can wrap it around your head’,” she explained, before saying she was then forced to remove the T-shirt.

According to Hashemi, the FBI officers also disregarded her diet.

"What they offered me was a bologna sandwich. So, I am assuming that that was beef," she said referring to her halal diet, which means, for instance, pork products are forbidden and the slaughter of the animal must be practiced in a specific way.

Hashemi called on people to keep up with the rallies which her detention had sparked.

"Because it is not about Marzieh Hashemi, it is not about me, it is about the ability for the US, basically, to detain anyone. I was there illegally though they are going to say that it is legal. So, it is much bigger than me. We want to demand a stop to these actions in this country," she explained.

Hashemi was detained by the FBI under a little used 'material witness' statute on at St. Louis Lambert International Airport on January 13. She had been filming a Black Lives Matter documentary after visiting relatives in the New Orleans area.
