Venezuela: White House in 'despair,' cannot defeat Venezuela - Maduro *EXCLUSIVE*

Venezuela, Bolivarian Republic of, Caracas
January 30, 2019 at 14:34 GMT +00:00 · Published

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro termed the US approach to the Venezuelan political crisis a sign of "despair," speaking in Caracas during an interview with a Russian news agency on Wednesday.

"It is the first time in history that something like this has happened. This shows the level of despair they have in the White House. Because they cannot defeat Venezuela. It is very delicate. What am I doing? Exerting my leadership, my constitutional command," stressed Maduro.

The political situation in Venezuela remains unclear after opposition leader and head of the National Assembly Juan Guaido declared Maduro's recent inauguration illegitimate, declaring himself interim president on January 23.

The US and a majority of Latin American countries have already recognised the opposition leader as head of the Venezuelan state.

Russia, China, Mexico and Turkey have publicly backed Maduro.

Answering a question about any risks for Russia in its cooperation with Venezuela after new US sanctions against the Venezuelan state-owned oil and natural gas company PDVSA, Maduro said that he sees no such downside.

"Russia is an independent and sovereign country. Russian companies are very powerful in the world," he stated.
