Venezuela: ‘I am not going to be a traitor’ – Maduro defies Trump’s regime change plan *EXCLUSIVE* **PARTNER CONTENT**

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro vowed not to betray his country by giving in to Washington’s desire to topple power in Caracas, speaking in an exclusive interview with RT in the Venezuelan capital on Monday.

“I do not care how I’m going to go down in history, I’m not going to be a traitor, a weak one, like a man who turned his back on his historic commitments to his people,” Maduro said.

The Venezuelan president rejected an ultimatum by European countries to call snap presidential elections in the country, saying that “the only elections that are we are waiting for in Venezuela are parliamentary ones, which will happen in 2020, according to the Constitution.”

Maduro said that “in Venezuela there is going to be no war, no military intervention, which does not mean that we do not prepare to defend our land” and asked “the whole world, heads of state, heads of government, world leaders […] to come forward to denounce and stop the madness of Donald Trump.”

He stated that behind Trump’s desire to change regime in Venezuela were the country’s vast natural resources, as “we don’t have the weapons of mass destruction, we don’t pose any security threat to them.”

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido proclaimed himself interim president on January 23 after declaring Maduro's January 10 inauguration illegitimate.

Maduro has condemned the decision of a number of countries to recognise Guaido as Venezuela’s acting president.
