Let’s HANG around! Voronezh woman takes care of 250 BATS in her flat

Elena Sherstyanyh is basically the Batwoman of Voronezh as she takes care of 250 bats in her apartment.

With temperatures outside fluctuating, bats are waking up from their hibernation way too early and would likely die as a result. However, Elena has taken them under her wing, feeding and sheltering them until spring comes for real.

“I realised how much they need protection. In Russia, there are no organisations that would be engaged in the protection [of bats] or at least keet statistics. If they are found in dangerous places, for example, in winter on the balcony, they have nowhere to go. If I quit doing this, all these animals will die. My passion is more out of the need to help them survive,” Elena said.

She even lets them stay in the relative cold of her fridge, simulating conditions outside. They’ll all be released back into the wild when spring comes.

She also believes that bats are really misunderstood, saying “all the myths that they can attack people, bite, transmit diseases are greatly exaggerated.”
