USA: Butina to be sentenced on April 26 - lawyer

United States, Washington DC
March 28, 2019 at 16:14 GMT -00:00 · Published

A judge scheduled the sentencing of Maria Butina, who is accused of spying on the US for Russia, for April 26, according to Butina's attorney Robert Driscoll, who spoke after a status hearing in Washington DC on Thursday.

"I am more than happy to have a sentencing on the calendar, obviously, the final sentence imposed will be up to the court. We will make our best presentation we can," added Driscoll.

He also said that he hopes the time Maria has already spent in prison will be counted as served.

Butina, a former student at American University and a gun rights activist, admitted in December to conspiring to act as an agent for the Kremlin without registering in the US. She was the first Russian to be convicted of working to influence US policy during the 2016 presidential race.
