UK: 'No one is above the law' - May on Assange's arrest

United Kingdom, London
April 11, 2019 at 14:28 GMT +00:00 · Published

UK Prime Minister Theresa May commented on the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange which had taken place hours before in London on Thursday, while addressing the House of Commons after negotiating an extension to Article 50 the day before.

"I would like to thank the Metropolitan Police for carrying out their duties with great professionalism and to welcome the cooperation of the Ecuadorian government in bringing this matter to a resolution. Mr Speaker, this goes to show that in the United Kingdom no one is above the law," stressed May.

Touching upon the Brexit issue, May said that she hoped for "a single unified approach that we can put to the House for approval" inviting MPs to "reflect on the decisions that will have to be made swiftly on our return after Easter."

Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn in turn said that he hails the efforts the government has made to reach out to opposition for talks, though mentioning "government's fundamental error in not proceeding by consensus" earlier.

The UK and the EU agreed a 'flexible extension' of Brexit until 31 October.
