Singers from the Bolshoi Theatre, the Mariinsky, the Novaya Opera and other leading theatres in Russia recorded their rendering of Schubert’s Ave Maria in tribute to Notre Dame Cathedral.
The historic building went up in flames on the evening of Apr 15. According to investigators, an electrical short-circuit was the most likely cause of the disaster.
More than 400 firefighters were reportedly involved in the operation to bring the blaze under control.
The iconic spire of the centuries-old Gothic structure, as well as large parts of the roof, collapsed during the conflagration. The main structure of the building, including its two bell towers, has reportedly been saved and is no longer in danger of collapse. Over 1 billion euros has been raised so far for the building’s reconstruction, which French President Emmanuel Macron has promised will be completed in five years.
