WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange met with the UN's Special Rapporteur on the Right to Privacy Joe Cannataci at Her Majesty's Prison Belmarsh in London on Thursday.

"What we are investigating at this moment of time is whether there's a breach of Article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Article 17 of the International Government of Civil and Political Rights," Cannataci told reporters.

He added that Assange believes 'his privacy has been infringed and that is a very wide range of possible infringements.'

Cannataci explained that the whistleblower's case is 'important' because it 'concerns a very special set of circumstances where a person who is not formally under detention yet was subjected to surveillance.'

Assange is being held at Her Majesty's Prison Belmarsh in London after he was removed from the Ecuadorian embassy on April 11, bringing his seven-year long stay in the building and his asylum status to an end.

He is due to appear in court on May 2.
