UK: 'We will fight till victory' - WikiLeaks' Editor-in-Chief after Assange hearing

United Kingdom, London
May 02, 2019 at 11:45 GMT +00:00 · Published

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's lawyer Jennifer Robinson and WikiLeaks' Editor-in-Chief Kristinn Hrafnsson commented on the Westminster Magistrates Court hearing on a request by the US to extradite WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on charges of leaking classified information in London on Thursday.

"Despite what you heard from the prosecutor in the court today, this case is not about hacking,” emphasized Robinson, who labelled the extradition case as mounting court proceedings against an investigative journalist and his alleged source Chelsea Manning.

Robinson cautioned against the free speech implications of the extradition case, adding: “Any prosecution and extradition of Mr. Assange… will place a massive chill on investigative journalism the-world-over.”

WikiLeaks' Editor-in-Chief Hrafnsson on his part discussed Assange’s difficult life in Belmarsh Prison‘s ‘appalling facility’ saying, “He has spent 23 or 24 hours a day in his cell most of the time, that is what we call in general terms solitary confinement.”

“We will fight till victory,” he added.

Assange is accused of conspiring with former US Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to break into US military intelligence files.

The Southwark Crown Court in London on Wednesday sentenced Assange to 50 weeks of prison for his alleged breach of his bail conditions by taking refuge inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden on rape allegations.
