A new Chinese giant panda, named Yuan Yuan, was officially handed over to Vienna Zoo in a ceremony attended by Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and the Chairman of China's Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Li Zhanshu on Monday.
The 19-year-old male panda was delivered to the zoological garden a month ago. Yuan Yuan was chosen as a partner for the zoo's 18-year-old female panda Yang Yang, two years after his predecessor died from a tumour.
Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen said sending Yuan Yuan to the Vienna Zoo on a loan is a sign of friendship betweem the two countries. China occasionally loans its giant pandas to other countries through research collaboration programmes, in what has become known as 'panda diplomacy'.
Yang Yang and Yuan Yuan live in separate facilities but they can see each other. The two pandas will only meet during the mating season next spring.
