USA: Pro-choice protest on steps of Supreme Court

United States, Washington DC
May 21, 2019 at 22:34 GMT +00:00 · Published

Hundreds of people rallied on the steps of the Supreme Court in Washington DC on Tuesday to protest against new legislation banning or restricting abortion in states like Alabama, Missouri and Louisiana.

Democratic presidential candidates Kirsten Gillibrand and Cory Booker made an appearance, alongside Senate Minority Leader Chuck Shumer and Congresswoman Jackie Speier.

The demonstration was organised by several pro-choice pressure groups, including Planned Parenthood, the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws and Pro-Choice America.

A wave of protests followed Alabama's passing of a law which banned abortion in almost all cases. Sixteen other states are seeking to follow suit.

Supporters of Alabama's abortion ban say they expect the law to be blocked in court, but hope that the appeals process will bring it before the US Supreme Court.

They hope the highest court in the land will overturn the 1973 Roe v Wade ruling which made abortion a right across the US.
