Portugal: Santos names his team ahead of Nations League final four

Portugal, Lisbon
May 23, 2019 at 20:30 GMT +00:00 · Published

The Head Coach of the Portuguese football team, Fernando Santos, announced his squad for the upcoming Nations League final in Lisbon on Thursday.

Santos kept a mix of experienced and young players, naming superstar Cristiano Ronaldo as captain of youngsters such as 19-year-old Joao Felix, who receives his first call-up.

When asked how he made the selections, the coach said "it is like mounting a puzzle because, when you mount a puzzle, you need to think about everything, in the characteristics of the players, what can happen, what cannot happen, for each game, for each competition."

"And regarding this competition, the choice was based only and exclusively in our style, which is to try and win the next competition we’re about to get into," he added.

Portugal will host Switzerland in Porto on June 5.

SOT, Fernando Santos, Portugal Coach (Portuguese): "To reach 23, we need to have some criteria. And one criterion, naturally, is the attendance and the competitive pace that players present [inaudible]. So, this is also an important choice, as is all the experience. So, it is like mounting a puzzle because, when you mount a puzzle, you need to think about everything, in the characteristics of the players, what can happen, what cannot happen, for each game, for each competition. And regarding this competition, the choice was based only and exclusively in our style, which is to try and win the next competition we're about to get into." *NO CUTAWAY AT SOURCE*

SOT, Fernando Santos, Portugal Coach (Portuguese): "For the players, to compete for a title is always very important. Regardless of what is more important to them, and I know that this is priority to them, it is also [important] for the adepts of the national team. Whether in private games or official games, the public has always been there. Because they are with Portugal and with the Portuguese team, so there is always the motivating factor. And also for the players, they are passionate to represent their country, to play for their country, as it is shown is every competition, and also in private games, these are not different. Especially when there is a title for which to fight. And we, as the other three candidates, want to win. So there is a certain motivating factor." *NO CUTAWAY AT SOURCE*
