The Russian Ice Hockey team reached the semi-finals of the IIHF World Championship after beating the USA 4-3 in Bratislava on Thursday.

It was the eighth straight victory for Russia at the tournament in Slovakia.

"We created a few problems for ourselves. We played well in the first period. We should have continued in the same manner, but instead we just pulled back, started to play from defence," said Russian Captain Ilya Kovalchuk.

Russia scored two goals in the first period with no response from the North American team. In the second period Ilya Vorobyov's squad slowed down and the USA managed to score once and had great chances to equalise. In the third period, Russia increased their speed and scored twice. The two goals from the USA were not enough to send the game to over-time.

"As the game went on we got better and created some more chances. We didn't give up. We were down by two or three different times and we came back and brought it to one .. just could not get the equaliser in the end but we fought to the end and you know they are a good team as well," said USA goalkeeper, Cory Schneider.

In the semi-final on Saturday, Russia will play against the lowest-seeded team which turns out to be victorious in its quarter-final.

SOT, Dmitry Orlov, Russian Defender (Russian): "It was a stressful game as both teams were willing to win. There was a lot of struggling and shots. I think we dominated in the first period. Then in the second period we again slowed down and we had unnecessary losses, that 's why the American team felt more confident and began to play better. But it's good that we managed to hold on to the score in the end of the game and win. Now we will be having rest and prepare for the semi-final. The main task today was to win. Vasilevskiy did great job today again, he saved the team when it was necessary."

SOT, Ilya Kovalchuk, Russia Captain (Russian): "We created a few problems for ourselves. We played well in the first period. We should have continued in the same manner, but instead we just pulled back, started to play from defence - I don't know - there wasn't such a task. That's why we conceded a goal and the game turned stressful for us. In the third period we played really well, scored necessary goals and Vasilevskiy made important saves."

SOT, Ilya Vorobyov, Russian Head Coach (Russian): "We didn't expect a different kind of game. They have a very talented team with skilled players in roster, who could create a goal out of half a chance. We are moving on and getting ready for the next match."

SOT, Andrey Vasilevskiy, Russian Goalkeeper (Russian): "We have no preferences for an opponent we will have to play against in the next game. We need to come out and play our hockey first of all."

SOT, Patrick Cane, USA Captain: "We have had a lot of momentum especially at the end of the second period. Would have been nice to find another one [second goal] and tie it up before the third [period]. It seemed like we had some things going on, but they always just seemed to have increased a little bit and keep it out of reach. Definitely disappointing and frustrating, but they are a good team."

SOT, Cory Schneider, USA Goalkeeper: "It was how we expected, they have a lot of talent offensively and we knew we gonna have to be strong offensively and try to create some turnover to get some offence. As the game went on we got better and created some more chances. We didn't give up. We were down by two or three different times and we came back and brought it to one.. just could not get the equaliser in the end but we fought to the end and you know they are a good team as well."
