Slovakia: Russia beat USA to reach hockey world championship semi-finalsMay 23, 2019 at 20:40 (GMT) · Published
The Russian Ice Hockey team reached the semi-finals of the IIHF World Championship after beating the USA 4-3 in Bratislava on Thursday.
It was the eighth straight victory for Russia at the tournament in Slovakia.
"We created a few problems for ourselves. We played well in the first period. We should have continued in the same manner, but instead we just pulled back, started to play from defence," said Russian Captain Ilya Kovalchuk.
Russia scored two goals in the first period with no response from the North American team. In the second period Ilya Vorobyov's squad slowed down and the USA managed to score once and had great chances to equalise. In the third period, Russia increased their speed and scored twice. The two goals from the USA were not enough to send the game to over-time.
"As the game went on we got better and created some more chances. We didn't give up. We were down by two or three different times and we came back and brought it to one .. just could not get the equaliser in the end but we fought to the end and you know they are a good team as well," said USA goalkeeper, Cory Schneider.
In the semi-final on Saturday, Russia will play against the lowest-seeded team which turns out to be victorious in its quarter-final.
