Belgium: EU's position on Brexit not changed - Juncker's spokesperson after May resigns

Mina Andreeva, Deputy Chief Spokesperson for European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, said that there will be no change in the European institutions' position on the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement and the Political Declaration, following UK Prime Minister Theresa May's resignation. Andreeva spoke in Brussels on Friday.

"The president very much liked and appreciated working with Prime Minister May and, as he has said before, Theresa May is a woman of courage, for whom he has great respect. He will equally respect and establish working relations with any new prime minister, whomever they may be, without stopping his conversations with Prime Minister May," said Andreeva.

"And our position on the Withdrawal Agreement, and anything else, has been set out by Margaritis [Schinas, chief EU Commission spokesperson] yesterday there is no change to that follow up, yes," she added.

Andreeva said that the EU's working assumption was that Brexit will take place on October 31, as it has been required by British authorities, in order to respect the people's will. She also said the EU institutions were ready for Brexit.

"We are ready. We have been ready. We continue to be ready, whatever the scenario is. But of course, our continued preference as expressed by the president, is an orderly withdrawal on the basis of the Withdrawal Agreement that has been negotiated with the UK," said Andreeva.

Earlier in the day, May announced that she will step down as Conservative Party leader on June 7, but that she would stay in office as prime minister until a new leader was chosen.
