Spain: Barca must 'go forward' following Liverpool defeat - Valverde

Spain, Barcelona

FC Barcelona head coach Ernesto Valverde said that following his team's 4-0 defeat against Liverpool they cannot "bury their head in the sand but they must continue forward," during a press conference in Barcelona on Friday ahead of the Blaugrana's Copa del Rey final against Valencia.

"When you get eliminated from a competition, it's always tough, but one must face obstacles as they come and stay strong. What you can't do is bury your head in the sand and disappear from the map," he said, adding that the team had to "go out tomorrow with everything we have and try to win a title that we've been after for a long time."

Barca captain Lionel Messi said it was unforgivable that the team "didn't commit" to the game. He added, "We were in line for the final and we let them get the better of us."

"It was a great year outside of that specific game, and that game I think, unfortunately, ruined the great year we had," he said.

Barcelona was defeated 4-0 by Liverpool on May 7 during the second leg of the UEFA Champions League, causing the Blaugrana to exit the competition.

SOT, Ernesto Valverde, FC Barcelona Head Coach (Spanish): "For sure, when you suffer a defeat, when you get eliminated from a competition, it's always tough, but one must face obstacles as they come and stay strong. What you can't do is bury your head in the sand and disappear from the map. One must face what happens and what they have ahead of them, which we have done in the two games after the Anfield face off, and now we have this chance to earn a title, and we must take advantage of this opportunity, try to have it be useful for us in the future but at the same time, go out tomorrow with everything we have and try to win a title that we've been after for a long time."

SOT, Lionel Messi, FC Barcelona player (Spanish): "We made a few mistakes, faults; the worst - and something that's unforgivable - is that we didn't commit. We were in line for the final and we let them get the better of us."

SOT, Gerard Pique, FC Barcelona player: "Of course, it was one of the worst experiences as a professional player, the game in Anfield. We tried to play Barcelona's style, sometimes it's easier to do it, sometimes it's more difficult. This is the idea we have inside the dressing room from the coach, from the players. But as I said a few days ago, I mean, it's not just what we want. Sometimes the other team plays, sometimes you have different players or players that maybe they are more comfortable playing another kind of game, so at the end of the day it's a lot of circumstances that made you play one way or the other way. The wish is that we want to play Barcelona style because it's what we have learned here in La Masia, all the players that we came from the off teams. But there are times like it was in Anfield, that it's not possible to have the ball, to control the game, and this is one of the reasons why we lost."

SOT, Lionel Messi, FC Barcelona player (Spanish): "Really, it's been a year - my first year as captain was an incredible year for me, we won La Liga, we were in the final of the Copa del Rey, we got the chance to get other titles. As I said earlier, and I repeat myself because it's true, but it was a great year outside of that specific game, and that game I think, unfortunately, ruined the great year we had."
