Spain: Barca must 'go forward' following Liverpool defeat - ValverdeMay 24, 2019 at 23:39 (GMT) · Published
FC Barcelona head coach Ernesto Valverde said that following his team's 4-0 defeat against Liverpool they cannot "bury their head in the sand but they must continue forward," during a press conference in Barcelona on Friday ahead of the Blaugrana's Copa del Rey final against Valencia.
"When you get eliminated from a competition, it's always tough, but one must face obstacles as they come and stay strong. What you can't do is bury your head in the sand and disappear from the map," he said, adding that the team had to "go out tomorrow with everything we have and try to win a title that we've been after for a long time."
Barca captain Lionel Messi said it was unforgivable that the team "didn't commit" to the game. He added, "We were in line for the final and we let them get the better of us."
"It was a great year outside of that specific game, and that game I think, unfortunately, ruined the great year we had," he said.
Barcelona was defeated 4-0 by Liverpool on May 7 during the second leg of the UEFA Champions League, causing the Blaugrana to exit the competition.
