Slovakia: Finland & Russia coaches reflect on world champs semi-final clash

Slovakia, Bratislava
May 25, 2019 at 19:19 GMT +00:00 · Published

The head coaches of the Russia and Finland ice hockey teams held a news conference in Bratislava on Saturday after their semi-final game. Finland beat Russia 1-0 in a surprise win against the team that many considered the pre-tournament favourite.

"What can we do, it was a one-goal game and, unfortunately, it was not us who scored it," said Russia head coach Ilya Vorobyov at the news conference.

Finland’s coach Jukka Jalonen said his team is not going to rest on its laurels. "I think it's not enough for that team. We want to win one more game tomorrow and we have started to prepare for that."

Finland will play against the winner of the Canada v. Czech Republic match in the final. Russia will compete for third place. Both games will take place on Sunday.

SOT, Ilya Vorobyov, Russian Ice Hockey Team Head Coach (Russian): "They were very different teams that we had to play against in the play-off. Today we faced a tough, tenacious team Finland, who played well defensively and whose players were catching pucks by themselves. The US team had also talented players who wanted to play more offensively. That's why it was probably easier for us to play against the Americans."

SOT, Jukka Jalonen, Finland Ice Hockey Team Head Coach: "Big win for us and Finnish hockey. We are obviously very happy for our performance and very proud of our players who competed against the very good Russian team. We played for each other and sacrificed for the team. Very tight and close game, scoring chances pretty even, but I think we kept Russia out of their comfort zone quite a bit."

SOT, Jukka Jalonen, Finland Ice Hockey Team Head Coach: "I think no matter which team comes against us in the final, they will play more aggressive style, they will forecheck more. Czechs are forechecking, Canadians are forechecking more, which gives us a little bit more challenge to get some good breakouts from our own zone. We will watch the match and make a game plan after that."
