Toe wrestling - a sport that keeps you on your toes

United Kingdom, Wetton
May 26, 2019 at 04:10 GMT +00:00 · Published

The official Toe Wrestling World Championship got off on the right foot in the village of Wetton in Staffordshire on Saturday.

Alan 'Nasty' Nash successfully defended his world title in the specially organised tournament at the local pub The Royal Oak.

Similar to arm wrestling, players link toes with each other, holding the foot flat against their opponents.

The aim is to pin your opponent for a count of three, just like in amateur wrestling.

The first game always starts with the right foot, followed by the left foot and then the right foot again if there is a tie.

Some competitors toe the line in terms of pushing rules of the game. For example Ben Woodroffe, a long-time competitor, has had his toenails surgically removed.

"There's lots of things that people do to try and gain that advantage but essentially it's all what in the toe and what's in the mind," he insisted.

The sport's newly-approved body - the World Toe Wrestling Federation - hopes the game will one day become an Olympic sport.

But for now, 1, 2, 3, 4, I declare a toe war!

SOT, Ben Woodroffe, tournament organiser: "Extremely competitive. You've got to be mentally and physically prepared. You've really got to be focused and physically strong. There is a lot of preparation that the elites, should we say, do. So Alan will shave his bum for static purposes to hold him and grip him down to the floor better. I had my toenails surgically removed. There's lots of things that people do to try and gain that advantage but essentially it's all what in the toe and what's in the mind."

SOT, Ben Woodroffe, tournament organiser: "It's only officially been recognised, the world toe wrestling federation, as a governing body this year. Before that, it's not actually been recognised as an official sport. Back in 1999 they applied to get into the Olympics, but the [International] Olympic Committee couldn't decide whether or not it was a winter or a summer sport so we got declined basically but now we've got official sports governing body which is us, the toe wrestling federation. That's what we are hoping to push for the Olympics and maybe more."

SOT, Alan 'Nasty' Nash, tournament winner: "I feel great after the victory. That's 16 now and still going so hopefully young enough to take a couple more. Ben caught me out there. He went for a defensive move straight away and attacked from defence which I've never seen that sort of move before so he caught me out. Not the second or third time though."
