Toe wrestling - a sport that keeps you on your toes

May 26, 2019 at 04:10 (GMT) · Published

The official Toe Wrestling World Championship got off on the right foot in the village of Wetton in Staffordshire on Saturday.

Alan 'Nasty' Nash successfully defended his world title in the specially organised tournament at the local pub The Royal Oak.

Similar to arm wrestling, players link toes with each other, holding the foot flat against their opponents.

The aim is to pin your opponent for a count of three, just like in amateur wrestling.

The first game always starts with the right foot, followed by the left foot and then the right foot again if there is a tie.

Some competitors toe the line in terms of pushing rules of the game. For example Ben Woodroffe, a long-time competitor, has had his toenails surgically removed.

"There's lots of things that people do to try and gain that advantage but essentially it's all what in the toe and what's in the mind," he insisted.

The sport's newly-approved body - the World Toe Wrestling Federation - hopes the game will one day become an Olympic sport.

But for now, 1, 2, 3, 4, I declare a toe war!
