Slovakia: 'It's going to be a tough game' - Canada coach on facing Finns in final

Slovakia, Bratislava
May 25, 2019 at 23:21 GMT +00:00 · Published

Canada head coach Alain Vigneault admitted that a gold medal match against Finland would be "tough" after his side beat the Czech Republic to progress to the final of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championships

"It's going to be a tough game," Vigneault told a post-match press conference in Bratislava on Tuesday.

"We're going to need a full-team effort on both parts, offensively and defensively," he added.

The Maple Leafs easily beat the Czechs 5-1 in the second semi-final to set up a repeat on the 2016 final in Moscow, which Canada won 2-1.

Finland will be hoping to repeat their victory in their opening game of this year's tournament, when they beat Canada 3-1.

SOT, Alain Vigneault, Canada head coach: "Well, we needed that tonight. We had, you know, a very tough opponent that, you know, has been really on top of their game. We had talked prior to the game about, you know, the types of looks that we were looking for to have success against such a good opponent. And we were able to get those looks and we were able to get different guys to put the pucks in the net for us. So, you know, that has given us a chance to play tomorrow for gold and we're going to need a full-team effort on both parts, offensively and defensively."

SOT, Alain Vigneault, Canada head coach: "No. I mean this is a competitive tournament where every team can beat any team. It's a one-game showdown, so I watched that game today, it was hard-fought. You know, both teams had some looks and Finland won. They were the better team today and we're playing Finland and it's going to be a tough game. The only team that we've played so far that we haven't beaten."
