Germany: Bayern win German cup to secure domestic double

Germany, Berlin
May 25, 2019 at 23:50 GMT +00:00 · Published

Bayern Munich won their 12th domestic double after beating RB Leipzig in the DFB Pokal final on Sunday.

The winning team's coach Niko Kovac thanked the fans for sticking by him during difficult periods earlier in the season.

"I was asked to say a few words to the fans and I thanked them on behalf of the team for keeping us on our toes during the difficult time of October November. That we managed to get out of this crisis together," Kovac told reporters at a post-match press conference in Berlin's Olympiastadion.

"They proved that just in the last match against Eintracht and also today," he added.

Bayern went ahead through Robert Lewandowski, before Kingsley Coman doubled the lead in the second half. Lewandowski then added a late third to round off the victory.

Bayern were crowned Bundesliga champions for the seventh successive season last Saturday.

Success in the DFB Pokal means Niko Kovac has led Bayern to a domestic double in his first season in charge, one year after beating them in the final when he managed Eintracht Frankfurt.

SOT, Niko Kovac, Bayern Munich manager (German): "I'm very happy, of course. I am happy. We managed to get the trophy, what we set out to get besides the championship also the trophy. We managed to secure the double against a really good team from Leipzig and then of course it is clear that you are happy, that you feel joy in yourself, that you look forward to the coming hours with friends with acquaintances and relatives and that is the inner life of me."

SOT, Niko Kovac, Bayern Munich manager (German): "I keep looking to the left because the door...is open and I don't know if somebody might crash in after all. You have to consider the following. So we were last year (here in the final) underdog here with Eintracht. That we defeated FC Bayern (last year) was a sensation. The club had celebrated 30 years no success. That means that perhaps you approach the matter more emotionally. You also saw the fans last year. And FC Bayern Munich is a club that almost wins titles say every day or every year. The boys are happy now too, but maybe not like Eintracht last year, because maybe the multitude of titles doesn't give it away anymore. But you can be sure in the locker room everyone is happy and drinking. Everything is in a good mood. And then I tried to run away so that I wouldn't get wet from beer."

SOT, Niko Kovac, Bayern Munich manager (German): "Yes, I was asked to say a few words to the fans and I thanked them on behalf of the team for keeping us on our toes during the difficult time of October November. That we managed to get out of this crisis together, that we caught up on eleven points, I think we scored 30 goals, that we became champions, that we won the cup...that's only possible if you form a symbiosis between fans and team, too. And I also thanked the fans for giving me their support in the not easy time. They proved that just in the last match against Eintracht and also today impressively. And I thanked them from the bottom of my heart."
