Germany: Greens 'our main opponent' says AfD leader after EU elex.

Germany, Berlin

The leader of Alternative for Germany (AfD) Alexander Gauland called the German Green Party their "main opponent" after the recently concluded European Union elections, during a press conference in Berlin on Monday.

Gauland said that the Greens will "destroy this country if they get into government," and stated that it is their duty to "fight against the Greens."

When asked about the consequence of the Strache affair on AfD's results, Jorg Meuthen, the leading candidate of the right-wing party at the European elections, said that it did not have "a very strong effect." Brexit, on the other hand, led to "difficulties," according to Gauland.

The leader of AfD also spoke about the warning that was issued to Jews in Germany concerning the risks of wearing a kippa in public and said that "it must be possible for every person in this country to wear what they want."

The AfD attained 10.6 percent of the vote and came in fourth in the elections for the European Parliament, while the Greens ranked in second place with 20.5 percent, almost doubling their result from 2014.
