UK: England make perfect start to home World Cup with win over South Africa

United Kingdom, London

Host nation England made the perfect start to their quest for the Cricket World Cup as they beat highly-rated South Africa at The Oval in London on Thursday.

England captain Eoin Morgan said he was relieved the tournament began with a win for his side as "I've said we are going to lose games throughout the tournament. If it was to happen to be the first one, it didn't really matter. It is a relief to be off and running. It's great to get a win, and it's even better to produce a performance like that."

When drawn on whether the slow pitch at The Oval may have been made to favour his side he stated emphatically "I just want as fair a pitch as possible. I don't want any advantage at all. I'd like the best cricket wicket. I don't want it slanted one way or the other."

Despite losing the match, South Africa captain Faf du Plessis was already focused on what his side needed to do next, saying "England was better than us, in all three facets of the game they show why they are such a good cricket team. And now to have to look as if it's a league, it's a league competition. As disappointed as we are with our performances today, you have to make sure you learn from it quickly."

England next travel to Nottingham for their match against Pakistan on Monday, while South Africa remain at The Oval where they meet Bangladesh on Sunday.
