Sweden: Assange lawyer hopes detention denial will be 'new start for him'

Sweden, Uppsala
June 03, 2019 at 20:15 GMT +00:00 · Published

Julian Assange's lawyer Per E Samuelson spoke to the press in Uppsala on Monday regarding a Stockholm court's decision to reject a request from prosecutors to detain the WikiLeaks co-founder.

Regarding the rejection, Samuelson said it was a "step in the right direction" and hoped that the decision could be "a new start for him."

Samuelson visited Assange in late May and "could with [his] own eyes see that he was in a bad health."

On April 11, a lawyer for one of the women involved asked for the investigation to be resumed.

The Swedish prosecutor had reopened the sexual assault case against Assange on May 13.

Prosecutors had initially dropped the investigation in 2017, because they were unable to proceed while Assange remained in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

After spending seven years in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Assange is in prison in Britain following his arrest in April.

He was sentenced to 50 weeks in prison for violating his bail conditions.

SOT, Per E Samuelson, Julian Assange's lawyer: "I think is a big victory for Julian Assange. The first one in a long time. And he's well deserve that. It's also a victory for Sweden who upheld the rule of law. And it's a defeat for the prosecutors who once again, was punished, because not having conducted the case in a correct way. So, it's a step in the right direction."

SOT, Per E Samuelson, Julian Assange's lawyer: "I visited him on 24th of May, and I could with my own eyes see that he was in a bad health. He had a hard time to focus and concentrate on the right things. But I am not a doctor so I don't know how serious it is in the end. I hope he will recover. Perhaps today will be a new start for him."
