Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said that a war between Iran and the USA is unlikely to happen, speaking in an exclusive interview with RT in Doha on June 1.

“Nowadays we don’t see any of the sides wanting to start a war, neither Iran, nor the US,” he said.

"The Americans carry a special policy which they have made clear. This is a maximum pressure policy," the minister added.

Al-Thani also discussed the possibility of Qatar acquiring Russia's S-400 missile air defence system.

“This is a matter of technical assessment, and not a political decision. The political decision will be taken as soon as the technical requirements will be met,” the diplomat emphasised.

SOT, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatari Foreign Minister (Arabic): "Iran has recently declared its willingness to start a dialogue with the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and sign a non-aggression agreement. In the light of these proposals and the escalation that is going on in the region, it is necessary to show wisdom and consider these proposals. Indeed, there are concerns in some Gulf states regarding Iranian policy. It is necessary to clarify and discuss them at the negotiation table. For example, the Gulf states are wary of some weapons being developed by Iran. On the other hand, Iran is also concerned about some arming programmes implemented in the Gulf countries. That is why these concerns should be negotiated in order to reach an agreement on these issues. The US has its own policy and its own concerns over the Iranian policy, which may differ from the Gulf states’ complaints and their point of view. Nowadays we don’t see any of the sides wants to start a war, neither Iran, nor the US. The Americans carry a special policy which they have made clear. This is a maximum pressure policy. The US are not going to start a war. Iran, on its side, also says it has no desire to start a war. In this situation local forces should play leading role to prevent this war."

SOT, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatari Foreign Minister (Arabic): "Military cooperation [with Russia] is being carried out in several directions. At the initial stage, an agreement on military-technical cooperation was signed. We assess all our needs relying on criteria, which are of interest of the state of Qatar first and foremost. Who will meet our air defence or ground defence needs? What is our infrastructure today [in this area]? This is the main criteria for assessing the needs for the State of Qatar. Speaking of [buying] the S-400 complex or some other, this is a matter of technical assessment, and not a political decision. The political decision will be taken as soon as the technical requirements will be met. Now the state of Qatar relies on French and American arming programs. At the same time Qatar diversifies its military programs. "

SOT, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatari Foreign Minister (Arabic): "The technical assessment comes at a much later stage. It is possible to have a technical assessment that recommends not buying [S-400 missile complexes] at the current stage, or there could be a technical decision to make the purchase at a suitable time."

SOT, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatari Foreign Minister (Arabic): "After Israel carried out a series of violent acts and even started a war against our Palestinian brothers in the Gaza in 2009, Qatar decided to close the Israeli trade mission [on its own territory]. But contacts with Israel have not stopped since then, Qatar does not hide this fact. We use this relationship to help our brothers in Gaza. Egypt, unfortunately, does not allow us to carry this aid through its territory, while Israel allows us to use its territory to deliver aid to Gaza."
