UK: Dale Steyn injury adds to South Africa's woes

United Kingdom, Southampton
June 04, 2019 at 21:51 GMT +00:00 · Published

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis admitted that injury to fast bowler Dale Steyn would harm his side's World Cup chances after a poor start to the tournament.

"Injuries are absolutely never part of what you want to do when you come to a tournament like this," du Plessis told reporters at a press conference in Southampton on Tuesday.

The challenge seems even greater given that the Saffers lost their first two games, the second against Bangladesh - opposition they were expected to beat, and face a stern test from India tomorrow.

Turning their campaign around from here will take substantial mental strength - something South Africa aren't known for at major tournaments.

"Naturally, younger guys in the team coming to their first World Cup - they will potentially go into their self-pity cycle," warned du Plessis.

"That is important that we don't go take a left turn into negative town. Stay positive, stay strong, make sure we keep pushing, but we are playing probably the world's No. 2 team at the moment."
