Russia: The West ‘lost interest’ in Syria after failing to overthrow Assad – Zakharova *PARTNER CONTENT*

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said the West lost interest in Syria after they "failed" to dethrone President Bashar al-Assad, speaking on the sidelines of the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on Thursday.

"Scenario which was prepared for Syria by Western states was not realised, they failed with the concept of withdrawing [Bashar] Assad and the 'Assad must go' concept was not realised," the spokesperson said.

Zakharova also discussed newly-elected Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskiy and his efforts to end the long lasting conflict in Donbass.

"New president, especially because he was not elected by Donbass people should send a signal for the whole country and I am not sure that the weapon signal is the right one," she said.

The spokesperson also expressed hope for a brighter future cooperation between Russia and the United Kingdom.

The Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum runs from June 6-8.

The forum brings together the heads of international organisations, well-known public figures, leading academics, experts and the media.

SOT, Maria Zakharova, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson (Russian): "Scenario which was prepared for Syria by Western states was not realised, they failed with the concept of withdrawing [Bashar] Assad and the 'Assad must go' concept was not realised. And now when the terrorism is, of course, not fully conquered, but stopped in Syria. And Syrian people have a real chance to build their future, their brand new peaceful life. I think they [the West] just lost any sort of interest to this country."
