Blind Valencia fan immortalised by symbolic pitch-side statueJune 10, 2019 at 13:39 GMT +00:00 · Published
At the Mestalla football stadium, home of Valencia CF, the club has installed a statue honouring one of its most loyal fans, Vicente Navarro Aparicio who passed away two years ago, footage filmed on Monday shows.
Aparicio had the membership card number 17, and despite becoming blind following a detached retina, he continued to go to the Mestalla stadium to follow live the games of his team, accompanied by his son, who was telling him what happened on the pitch.
Despite having been installed two months ago, the statue went viral around the world recently, thanks to a photograph a Tottenham fan published on her social media.
Both the club and the family of Vicente are tremendously proud of this impact.
"My father came to live the atmosphere," explained his son, also named Vicente, who also said: "It has been a true honour. If my father would have been alive, the emotion would have killed him."
