Russia: Hosts beat UEFA legends in St. Petersburg to mark one-year countdown to Euro 2020

An exhibition football match between teams consisting UEFA legends and former Russian footballers took place in St. Petersburg on Wednesday, marking the one-year countdown to the 2020 European Football Championships.

The game, which coincided with the Russian national holiday 'Russia Day', saw the host team beating their European rivals on penalties, after the match was tied 16:16 after normal time.

The UEFA team consisted of former Italy and FC Barcelona defender Gianluca Zambrotta, ex-France and Arsenal winger Robert Pires, former Juventus striker David Trezeguet, ex-Real Madrid and Liverpool great Fernando Morientes and former Russian goalkeeper Alexander Filimonov.

The Russian squad was represented by FC Zenit Saint Petersburg goalkeeper Mikhail Kerzhakov, former midfielders Dmitri Sychev, Roman Shirokov and Vladislav Radimov and Lithuanian club FK Trakai playmaker Diniyar Bilyaletdinov.

St. Petersburg is among the 12 cities that will host the Euro 2020 matches. The tournament will be held from June 12 to July 12 in 2020. The Gazprom Arena will host three group stage matches and one quarter final in the competition.
