India: BJP supporters clash with police in Kolkata protests

June 12, 2019 at 15:42 (GMT) · Published

Supporters and members of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clashed with police in Kolkata, on Wednesday, after they tried to march to the police headquarters in the heart of the city.

Footage shows police using batons, tear gas and water cannons on hundreds of slogan shouting protesters, who are seen throwing back tear gas canisters.

Some of the party workers were seen holding a sit-in demonstration in the protest area.

West Bengal State Governor Kesri Nath Tripathi called for a meeting of the state’s major political parties on Thursday to ease tensions.

Today's protest was in response to the killing of two BJP workers at Basirhat on Saturday, which the BJP claims were only two among many other workers killed in recent clashes.
