Iran: Oil tanker ablaze at sea following blast in the Gulf of Oman

June 13, 2019 at 16:28 (GMT) · Published

Two oil tankers were reportedly hit in a suspected attack in the Gulf of Oman, early on Thursday.

Footage shows one of the tankers ablaze in open sea, with smoke rising above the vessel.

Crews from the Marshall Islands-flagged Front Altair and the Panamanian-flagged ship Kokuka Courageous reportedly abandoned the ships after the blasts.

Despite Iranian media reporting that the crews of both vessels had been rescued by Tehran, the US Navy contradicted these reports and said that 21 of the rescued sailors were onboard a US military vessel.

The cause of the incident, which happened outside the Strait of Hormuz, is not yet clear.
