Peru: Venezuelan families continue rush to border amid new restrictions

Peru, Tumbes
June 15, 2019 at 11:52 GMT +00:00 · Published

Several Venezuelans rushed from Ecuador towards the Peruvian border on Friday in order to enter Peru just a few hours before new entry restrictions came into force.

From June 15 onwards, Venezuelan migrants will require humanitarian visas issued at Peruvian consulates located abroad prior to entering Peru. Before June 15, Venezuelan migrants were able to acquire the visas at the Peruvian border.

Footage shows families with children running to the border with their belongings and waiting for local migration authorities. Peruvian police were at the scene to guard the border.

After entering the country, migrants formed long queues outside the Binational Border Care Centre (Cebaf) in Tumbes where they waited for guidance from officials. Footage shows families sitting and sleeping on the floor.

Since the measures were announced by Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on June 6, Cebaf has reportedly received around 4,500 Venezuelan migrants per day. Since 2017, a total of 768,000 have entered Peru.

According to the United Nations, over four million Venezuelans have left their country since 2015 due to the severe economic crisis in the oil-rich country.
