UK: Sharma ton leads India to victory over rivals Pakistan

United Kingdom, Manchester
June 17, 2019 at 02:32 GMT +00:00 · Published

A match-winning knock from opening batsman Rohit Sharma set the tone for India's thrashing of Pakistan in the 2019 Cricket World Cup at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Sharma's 140 from 113 balls led his team to an impressive total of 336-5, alongside an important 77 from captain Virat Kohli.

India, who have never lost a World Cup match to Pakistan, were further helped by a Pakistan batting collapse, falling to 166-6 before a rain delay saw their target revised to 136 runs from 30 balls.

They eventually finished on 212-6, a defeat which handed the bragging rights to their fierce rivals in this marquee game of the World Cup, with a sell-out crowd and an estimated one billion TV viewers.

The tournament's top run-scorer put his rich vein of form down to positive influences in his life.

"Having a daughter, a newly born daughter in my life actually has put me in a good space. I think I'm enjoying my cricket, coming off from a great IPL campaign," he told journalists at a post-match press conference.

Sharma also downplayed the pressure of playing against Pakistan.

"All the outside talk and all that will keep happening, but for us, it's just to focus on the job at hand."

India play Afghanistan next on Saturday, while Pakistan face South Africa on June 23.
