USA: Warren, Buttigieg, Harris make pitches to Dems in race to topple Trump

Leading Democratic candidates took to the stage at the South Carolina National Democratic Convention in Columbia on Saturday as they made their pitches in a bid to be selected as the Dems' leading candidate going into the 2020 presidential election.

Following the likes of Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders, the race's two favourites at the time of writing, Elizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg and Kamala Harris spoke to the thousands-strong crowd who had gathered at the Columbia Convention Center.

Warren said she would roll out a new fiscal plan were she elected president.

"I've got some big plans. Let's start with a wealth tax. Two cents on the top one tenth of one percent," she announced.

Buttigieg went on to refer to Donald Trump's presidency as a 'horror show', saying America must 'change channel.'

Harris then received a rapturous reception as she tore into Trump and his 'Make America Great Again' slogan.

Twenty of the 24 Democratic presidential candidates will be taking part in the first primary debates over two nights on June 26 and 27, but the road to the nomination is still long as the candidate to take on Trump will not be decided until July 2020.
