USA: Beto, De Blasio, Booker woo voters at Carolina Democrat Convention

United States, Columbia, SC
June 23, 2019 at 08:07 GMT +00:00 · Published

Thousands of US Democratic Party supporters gathered for campaign speeches by 2020 presidential candidates in Columbia, South Carolina on Saturday including former representative Beto O’Rourke, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio and senator Cory Booker.

O’Rourke focused on migration and climate change in his speech.

"In my hometown of El Paso in a border patrol detention centre there are children sleeping on cold concrete floors with aluminium foil for blankets in the worst, most inhumane conditions. This is the same administration and government that placed those kids in cages, deported their mothers back to the very countries from which they fled and has lost the lives of six children who were in the custody of this country. That cannot be us, that cannot be America," he said.

New York City mayor Bill de Blasio made healthcare and welfare the centrepoint of his speech.

"I got sick of waiting for Washington DC to address the question of healthcare. I got sick of seeing millions of Americans, hundreds of thousands of people in my town who didn't have health insurance and couldn't get the healthcare they need. I decided: let's just go right for it. Today in New York we are guaranteeing healthcare for anyone who does not have insurance," said De Blasio.

Senator Cory Booker appealed to the emotional state of the electorate.

He said: "The world you see outside of you is the reflection of what you have inside of you. And if you are one of those people who looks around and all you see is problems, darkness and despair - that's all there's ever going to be."

Twenty of the 24 Democratic presidential candidates will be taking part in the first primary debates over two nights on June 26 and 27, but the road to the nomination is still long as the candidate to take on Trump will not be decided until July 2020.
