UK: England's Bairstow had 'fire in his belly' says Morgan after win over India

England cricket captain Eoin Morgan hailed the performance of Jonny Bairstow in his side's victory over India at the Cricket World Cup on Sunday. He made the comments at a press conference in Birmingham in the immediate aftermath of the match.

Bairstow scored 111 runs while bowler Liam Plunkett took three wickets to help England beat India by 31 runs.

Bairstow's knock came after a tricky week for the batsman in which he copped some flack for saying “people have been waiting for us to fail" in the wake of back-to-back defeats.

"He likes a bit of fire in his belly, and I don't mind that when he comes out and plays like that and feels like the way he did. I think it's outstanding. It's definitely a match-winning knock. So we're delighted for him," said Morgan of his star batsman.

England's captain said his team will need to be on top of their game if they are to progress in the tournament. They require victory in their next game against New Zealand to secure qualification to the knockout stages. A loss would see them crash out of the tournament if Pakistan beat Bangladesh on Friday.

"The closer we can get to playing our A-game, the more of a chance we have of going the whole way. If we're scraping our way along, not playing the type of cricket we played in the last four years, I wouldn't be as confident," said Morgan.

Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma meanwhile was full of praise for England following the match. "The England team, they played complete cricket. They bowled really well. They batted really well. They got the result," he said.
