Peru: Peruvian fans 'proud' of their team despite losing Copa America finals

Peru, Lima

Hundreds of Peruvian fans gathered at an open-air screening of the Copa America finals in Lima on Sunday as Peru faced off against Brazil in the 46th edition of South America's premiere football championship.

The public viewing wore shades of contrasting colours as the first half of the game saw Peruvian fans cheering, singing, lighting smoke torches and going ecstatic as the team scored an equaliser, before the mood turned pensive with fans looking disappointed with the final result, losing to Brazil 3-1.

Despite the loss, festivities eventually picked up again as one Peruvian fan, Job Buendía explained that "after 44 years we are finalists, the emotion is incomparable" with another fan, Julio Merino adding that "I feel proud to be Peruvian because nobody thought this about our players."

The 2019 Copa America final was played at the legendary Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, 7 July with Brazil winning the title for the ninth time.
