The number of people injured in a fire that broke out at a power station in the Moscow Region town of Mytishchi on Thursday has risen to 12.

According to the Center of Disaster Medicine, they have first and second degree burns and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.

In total, 157 people and 50 units of fire equipment, including two fire-fighting aircraft and two fire trains, are involved in tackling the blaze. Fire teams have managed to bring the jet fire under control.

The fire spread along the gas pipe, technical rooms and building, covering an area of more than 800 square metres.

The conflagration broke out when a gas container at the facility ignited, according to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM). Reportedly, one of the power unit’s fail-safes was triggered and it stopped generating power due to the fire.

The power plant was put into operation in 1992 and predominantly uses natural gas as fuel.
