USA: 'No dictatorship lasts forever' – US Envoy to Venezuela

United States, Washington DC
July 12, 2019 at 23:39 GMT +00:00 · Published

The US Special Representative for Venezuela Elliott Abrams warned the Venezuelan government that "no dictatorship lasts forever" in light of a recent report by UN High Commissioner Michele Bachelet that revealed the existence of human rights violations perpetrated by the state.

Abrams referred to detainees being subject to "beatings, asphyxiation, sexual abuse, cutting the soles of the feet with razor blades, electric shocks, food deprivation, death threats to family members" and warned that the immense flow of migrants and refugees out of the crisis-hit nation would only continue to grow if such issues were not addressed. According to the UNHCR, over 4 million Venezuelans have fled the country in the last four years.

United States Ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS) and current Chair of Permanent Council of Organisation of American States Carlos Trujillo pointed the finger solely at Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro for the ongoing humanitarian crisis, deflecting criticisms that US sanctions have worsened the situation.

"We have to bear in mind that the economic collapse in Venezuela has been ongoing for more than five years, while the sanctions have only been in force for less than two months," he said.

Venezuela's Deputy Foreign Minister William Castillo dismissed the report as "biased" on Friday, during a United Nations Human Right Council meeting in Geneva.
