Turkish cook Hasan Acar has sent a traditional baked filled pastry 'borek' to Russian President Vladimir Putin "to express our gratitude" for the first shipment of Russia's S-400 missile system delivered to Turkey earlier this week. Footage filmed in the Turkish city of Bursa on Saturday shows Acar preparing the borek.

Acar made the borek with spinach filling and sent it with a cargo carrier to Moscow on Saturday. According to the cook, the pastry is set to arrive in around six days.

The cook explained the choice of the filling "because it can endure long distances and it has benefits for the health." He added, "I know from my previous experiences that this borek will go up to ten days."

The borek was prepared two days ahead of the third anniversary of the July 15, 2016 coup attempt against the Turkish government. Acar noted, "Today is a very important day for us. It is an anniversary of the 15th of July. It is also very important that S400 [systems] are delivered to our country, which is extremely important for our security. That's why; we wanted to send a borek to the Russian leader, to express our gratitude."

In the event that the borek fails to reach Putin in time, Acar invited the Russian leader to his restaurant to try the pastry directly at source. He said, "If our borek doesn't make it, I would like to bake it here. I know that Mr Putin told our president to take him to a restaurant in Istanbul. I would like to invite them here."

On Friday, Turkey received the first parts of Russia's S-400 air defence system. According to the Russian defence ministry, the delivery of other parts of the missile system will take place in accordance with the contract and within the timeframe agreed by both sides.
