From co-working to co-living: PodShare offers solution to unaffordable housing

A co-living space renting out “pods” to live in is making a splash in Los Angeles and San Francisco as a novel way of dealing with housing unaffordability, as seen in footage filmed in San Francisco on Sunday.

CEO of PodShare Elvina Beck explained that one bunk bed – or “pod” - will set you back US$1000 (€887) a month in Los Angeles and US$1200 (€1064) in San Francisco, but argues that it’s money well spent with an ongoing housing affordability crisis that has seen rents skyrocket in urban areas in recent years.

“They have TVs, they have nightlights, they have personal outlets but the most important thing is you can afford to live close to work or find work in the places you want. It's opportunity cost," Beck said.

Basic food items like cereal and ramen, as well as toiletries such as toothpaste and toilet paper, are included in the deal. There is no deposit and no need for documentation such as payslips, making the arrangement ideal for young people or newly-arrived migrants.

Jose Estevez is one Podshare tenant who moved to San Francisco from Texas for a more urban and open-minded atmosphere. He says the unorthodox living arrangements create a sense of community that he values over the loss of privacy.

“Once you arrive, you're like, immediately within a community of people and everywhere you transfer, everybody is doing the same thing, or similar thing, everybody's ready to meet people,” he explained.

One pod is 50 square feet (4.6 metres) and can be rented per night, per week or per month.
