USA: Democratic presidential candidates campaign at NAACP convention

United States, Detroit
July 25, 2019 at 02:02 GMT +00:00 · Published

Democratic presidential candidates made their pitch to the black voters in next year elections at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Annual National Convention in Detroit on Wednesday.

Sending a strong and united message against the Trump administration, the candidates called on the crowd to win the critical African-American vote in 2020.

Frontrunner and former vice president Joe Biden said politics was in a "battle for the soul of the country" with "a president who's done everything to divide us and split us apart."

Fellow candidate Julian Castro accused Trump of "stoking" white nationalism and the "identity politics of the old right."

Referring to the congressional testimony of special counsel Robert Mueller regarding investigations on the Russian interference in the 2016 elections, Kamala Harris said "the only reason there was not an indictment returned is because of a memo in the United States Department of Justice that says a sitting president cannot be indicted."

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders also commented the Russia inquiry: "[I know] for a fact that the President did everything that he could to obstruct the Mueller investigation.
