France: ‘Black Vests’ demand legal status, end of police brutality

France, Montreuil
August 03, 2019 at 19:34 GMT +00:00 · Published

France's so-called 'Black Vests' - undocumented migrant workers - took to the streets of Montreuil on Saturday to denounce police harassment and demand legal status.

Demonstrators held flags and chanted as they made their way through the streets of the Parisian suburb of Montreuil, decrying what they say is exploitation due to their lack of a legal status.

Richard Delumbee, Head of France's General Confederation of Labour, told Ruptly that people with foreign origins were also being persecuted by the country's police force and government departments.

"This is a demonstration of immigrant workers with or without permits, and they ask the police to stop this harassment," he said.

The Gilets Noirs - which translates into English as the "Black Vests" - a nod to the Yellow Vests protest movement that has engulfed France since December 2018, have been involved in organising a string of high profile actions that have targeted companies and locations, linked to their demands.

SOT, Riva Gherchanoc, Deputy Mayor of Montreuil (French): "Today is a rally with syndicates to support workers without permits. Because they are targeted by the prefecture. Some of them can't go to work because they are controlled by police. "

SOT, Richard Delumbee, Head of General Confederation of Labour (French): "This is a demonstration of immigrant workers with or without permits, and they ask the police to stop this harassment. The interior minister, Mr Castaner just named a new prefect who is a tough person; called Mr. Leclerc. He had been condemned for illegal decision-making in Nice in the past, thus it's clear that we, the people from foreign origins, are stigmatised in these departments."
