USA: Beto O'Rourke says Trump ‘incites’ violence at El Paso vigil

United States, El Paso

US Presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke criticised US President Donald Trump for some of his choice of words, claiming that he incites violence, while speaking at a vigil for the El Paso shooting victims in El Paso on Sunday.

O'Rourke spoke out against Trump, "who incites this violence, who calls Mexican immigrants 'rapists and criminals', who calls asylum seekers 'animals' and 'an infestation', you may call a cockroach an infestation, you may use that word in the Third Reich to describe those who were undesirable, who must be put down because they are subhuman."

"You do not expect to hear that in the United States of America, in this age, in our generation, with this beautiful country that decided 243 years ago that we would not define ourselves by race, or ethnicity, or our differences, but by the fact that we were all created equal," he added.

"As you well know, but it bears repeating so the rest of the world knows this, he was not from El Paso, Texas. He was from half-a-state away, bringing that fear, bringing that anger, bringing that hatred, and bringing that racism," O'Rourke said about shooting suspect Patrick Crusius.

On Saturday, 20 people were killed and more than two dozen injured, after a gunman opened fire at a Walmart store inside the Cielo Vista Mall, the largest shopping centre in El Paso, Texas.

A 21-year-old suspect has been arrested and named by police as Dallas-resident Patrick Crusius.

In the early hours on Sunday morning, only hours after Saturday's shooting in El Paso, another mass shooting occurred where a gunman opened fire near the entrance of a bar in downtown Dayton, Ohio, leaving 10 killed and 27 others injured.

The gunman was killed by police within a minute of the shots being fired, and was identified as 24-year-old Connor Betts.
